Archaeopteryx
is considered to be one of the most important fossils ever discovered in
the world of paleontology.
The skeleton is essentially that of a theropod
dinosaur, and possesses teeth, a long bony tail, abdominal ribs and three
digits on each hand - characters absent in birds. However, the specimens
also show certain bird characteristics such as a furcula (wishbone) and a
retroverted pubis (characteristics also shared with some dinosaurs) and a
opposable hallux (big toe) for perching. The most spectacular feature
is the distinct impression of feathers around the forelimbs and tail.
These feathers are almost exactly like those of modern birds. |

The finest Archaeopteryx replica in the world.
Only eight authentic specimens have been found. If it had not been for
the fossil's feather impressions, this primitive bird skeleton would have
been mistaken for that of a dinosaur.

A Correlated History of the Earth
Laminated Poster A
Correlated History of the Earth is a full-color educational wall chart
documenting 4.5 billion years of Earth's natural history. Each column is a
timeline ranging from ancient to modern times. Plate tectonic maps,
mountain building events, major volcanic episodes, and glacial epochs are
charted in conjunction with over 100 classic fossil localities from around
the world. Also evident on this chart are the fossil ranges of plants,
invertebrates and vertebrate life forms, and major extinction events as
revealed by the fossil record. The "Cambrian explosions" of animal phyla and
the juxtaposition of reptiles and mammals across the Cretaceous/ Tertiary
(K/T) boundary are also described. Many interesting illustrations of
different life forms are displayed in correlation with the time periods from
which they are known. Also included is a detailed fossil footprint and
trackway chart, and a Genetic Timescale that describes relationships between
different life forms. Published in its 4th, most recent edition.
