Archaeopteryx is considered to be one of the most important fossils ever discovered. The skeleton is essentially that of a theropod dinosaur and possesses teeth, a long bony tail, abdominal ribs and three digits on each hand - characters absent in birds. However, the specimens also show certain bird characteristics such as a furcula (wishbone) and a retroverted pubis (characteristics also shared with some dinosaurs) and a opposable hallux (big toe) for perching. The most spectacular feature is the distinct impression of feathers around the forelimbs and tail. These feathers are almost exactly like those of modern birds. |

Banded Onyx Wine Glasses Banded Onyx is formed when hydro-thermal vents alter limestone. The hot underground water associated with hydrothermal activity dissolves the calcium carbonate in the limestone. As the water cools, the calcium carbonate is precipitated as onyx. The banding results from continuous sequential deposition of the carbonate minerals. Different colors are caused by trace amounts of iron in its oxidized (red and brown) and reduced (green) forms. Onyx, at one time, was more precious than gold, silver, or sapphire. Onyx is also the anniversary gemstone for the 7th year of marriage. These wine glasses are available in sets of 2 that are packaged in their own velvet and satin lined storage and display box. They are safe for use with all but red wines as these will stain the stone.
