Archaeopteryx is considered
to be one of the most important fossils ever discovered in the world of
paleontology. The skeleton
is essentially that of a theropod dinosaur, and
possesses teeth, a long bony tail, abdominal ribs and three digits on each
hand - characters absent in birds. However, the specimens also show certain
bird characteristics such as a furcula (wishbone) and a retroverted pubis
(characteristics also shared with some dinosaurs) and an opposable hallux
(big toe) for perching. The most spectacular feature is the distinct
impression of feathers around the forelimbs and tail. These feathers
are almost exactly like those of modern birds. |

Coelocanth Casting
Mozambique Channel,
between the island of Madagascar and southeast Africa
Measures 5 feet in
length
$699.
Cast from a once living, modern Coelocanth that was netted
by a Japanese fisherman. Hand painted to demonstrate the natural
coloration of the species.
|
| Although now represented by only two known living species,
as a group the coelacanths were once very successful with many genera and
species that left an abundant fossil record from the Devonian to the end of
the Cretaceous period, at which point they apparently suffered a nearly
complete extinction. Before the living specimens were discovered, it was
believed by some that the coelacanth was a "missing link" between the fish
and the tetrapods. |

ANCIENT EGYPTIAN RELIEF
ANUBIS
This recreated Egyptian relief portrays the god Anubis
readying the scale in the Egyptian story known as the “Weighing of the Heart
Ceremony.” According to ancient Egyptian belief, when a person died he, or
she, would make a journey hoping to join Osiris (god of the dead) in the
afterlife. The final act at the end of this journey was for the dead
person’s heart to be weighed on a scale by Anubis (god of mummification)
against the weight of a feather, which represents truth and justice. Should
the heart weigh less than the feather, the deceased would be granted passage
to the afterlife with Osiris, but if the heart weighed more, it would be fed
to the monster Ammut, and the deceased would disappear forever.

Mosasaur Skull Casting
Tylosaurus proriger
Middle-late Cretaceous 85-80
million years ago
Kansas, Western Interior Seaway
Oak Base Measures approximately
42" x 11.5"
Skull measures approximately 40"
long x 11.5" wide and 21.5" high
$2000
|
| Tylosaurus
proriger grew more than 45 feet long, making it the largest of the
marine reptiles called mosasaurs. Like all mosasaurs, a long and muscular,
vertically flattened tail powered Tylosaurus through the water,
allowing it to ambush its prey with rapid bursts of acceleration.
Paddle-like limbs helped steer the slim body covered in lizard-like scales
through the water. |
