The term
Amphibian is derived from the Ancient Greek term amphíbios which
means both kinds of life and refers to animals that live both in the water
and on land. Amphibians first evolved in the Devonian Period, 416 to
359 million years ago. Amphibians established themselves as the top
predators during the Carboniferous (359 mya to 299 mya) and Permian (299
mya to 251 mya) Periods, but many species were wiped out during the
Permian–Triassic extinction 251 million years ago. There are only 3
modern orders of Amphibian: Anura, which includes frogs and toads, Caudata,
which are salamanders and newts, and Gymnophiona, which are limbless
amphibians that resemble snakes. |
