Liaoxiornis delicatus
Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous
Liaoning Province, China
Matrix measures
approximately 6.25" h x 5.25" w
Bird measures
4.75" high.
$7,000.
Laioxiornis
is one of the smallest birds known from the Mesozoic Era and once
thrived with other dinosaurs in the Liaoning Province of China.
While Laioxiornis had the body style of a typical bird, it still
retained its dinosaur claws and teeth. Laioxiornis is part of
a group of birds called enantiornithines, or "opposite-birds", which
eventually went extinct with other dinosaurs, leaving a more modern group
of birds to develop into the bird varieties that we see today.

FOSSIL BIRD TRACKS
Eocene, 50 million years ago
Green River Formation, Wyoming

The study of
traces is called ichnology, which is divided into paleoichnology, or the
study of trace fossils, and neoichnology, the study of modern traces. This
science is challenging, as most traces reflect the behavior, not the
biological affinity, of their makers. As such, trace fossils are
categorized into form genera, based upon their appearance and the implied
behavior of their makers.
