Fossil Walrus Oosik
Oosik is a term used in Native Alaskan cultures to
describe the baculum of walruses, seals, sea lions, and polar bears.
The baculum is the male reproductive bone found in most mammals.
Traditionally, native Alaskans such as the Inupiaq and Yupik people used
oosiks for a variety of purposes. The long, hard bone made a perfect
handle for anything from harpoons to knives. Larger ones were even used as
clubs by the Eskimos. At a length of up to 2 feet, fossilized bacula
are often polished and carved into decorative handles for knives and other
tools. They are also an excellent conversation piece for display |
