The country of Morocco, located in northwest Africa, is rich with fossils
such as ammonites, orthoceras, trilobites and dinosaur teeth. A portion of the Sahara
Desert, which once was an ocean, is contained within Morocco and holds many remains of
creatures that once inhabited the earth. Skilled artisans have taken great time and care
to prepare and polish some of the fossils on this page, such as the Fossil nautiloids and
select ammonites. Others such as the crinoids and fossil teeth are left in their natural
state. The Dinosaur Store® staff hand selects ALL of the fossils from
Morocco and only the finest specimens are accepted. |

Ammonites
Ammonites were cephalopods, predatory marine mollusks, and shared many
similarities with their modern relatives, the squid, octopus and chambered nautilus. The
term ammonite refers to an extinct group of mollusks. These creatures along with
dinosaurs, died out at the close of the Cretaceous period, about sixty five million years
ago. The most frequently preserved portion of the ammonite is the hard shell.
This shell served as protection for the soft tissue of the animal and also allowed the
animal to achieve buoyancy in the marine environment in which it lived. |

prey. The Fossil Nautiloids shown here are in a black limestone matrix
and have been polished. Slight color and pattern variations are to be
