Great White

Since the first sharks evolved over 400 million years ago, ways of life in the sea have changed very little. As a result, many of today's sharks are much like their ancient ancestors.  Modern sharks can tell us a great deal about sharks that have been extinct for millions of years.

Shark teeth are produced on a conveyor belt of gum tissue that lines the inside surface of the upper and lower jaws.  New teeth are formed within this gum tissue and are carried into a functional position closer to the edge of the mouth.  Each shark tooth is functional for a few days or weeks before its nutrient supply is cut off and the tooth falls out.

Because shark teeth are dense and tough, and composed of relatively stable calcium phosphate, their potential for fossilization is high.

The shark teeth on this page are just a few of the thousands of teeth we have in stock. If you do not see what you are looking for on this page, please call us Toll Free at 1.877.560.DINO.

Giant Shark Tooth in Natural Matrix

Lamna obliqua

Cretaceous, 100 million years ago

Khouribga, Morocco

This is the largest Lamna obliqua tooth that we have ever seen! This tooth measures 4.25 inches from root to tip! The features of this tooth are common to all Lamna/Otodus species; a massive root and large separate cusplets flanking the much larger center crown.  The characteristics indicate a highly developed and efficient hunter, much larger than the largest Great White!  The impressive size of this tooth makes it a very rare find.
