The name, trilobite, comes from the three distinct portions of their segmented body. The hard exoskeleton allowed good preservation as a fossil and served as defensive armor, but had to be shed periodically as the animal grew. These many legged arthropods roamed the sandy bottoms of the seas and coral reefs in search of food.   The trilobite is the earliest animal known to possess vision. The remarkable construction and preservation of trilobite eyes enable scientists to study the development of a sensory organ which is only rarely preserved in other organisms. As a group, trilobites survived for more than three hundred million years, from the Cambrian to the Permian period.

A highly-prized trilobite species with its strange shovel-like protrusion off the anterior of the cephalon (head).  It has been suggested that this appendage was used to root up food from the prehistoric ocean floor.

Dicranurus monstrosus

Devonian 360 million years ago

Megrane Formation, Morocco

The Dicranurus monstrosus must have been one of the most terrifying trilobite to all its fellow invertebrates.  It is well named looking like a "monster".  Large and long spines protruding out from its creepy body, this bottom-dwelling creature of the prehistoric seas would have been a marvel to see alive creeping across the ocean floor.  The Dicranurus monstrosus is one of the most sought-after species of rare spiny trilobites and very few authentic specimens ever make it to the public market.

$2500.

Forked Cumura

Walliserops trifurcatus

Devonian 380 million years ago

Morocco

The Walliserops trifurcatus trilobite (aka Forked Cumura) is one of the most fascinating and bizarre trilobites ever known from the Devonian limestone in Morocco..  It is theorized that the long, forked protrusion jutting out from the cephalon was used for stirring up the ocean floor as the creature scavenged for food.  They were shallow-dwelling marine animals that crawled across the prehistoric ocean floors nearly 400 million years ago.

$1850.

Spiny Trilobite
