Description

This is a beautiful, authentic SOUTH PACIFIC MEGALODON FOSSIL SHARK TOOTH !

This Tooth measures 4-1/4″ from tip to root along its longest side (industry standard).

The Megalodon was the largest shark that ever lived.  Megalodon means “big tooth”.  They lived from 23 to 3.6 million years ago , during the Early Miocene to the Pliocene. It was a close relative of the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias). While regarded as one of the largest and most powerful predators to have ever lived, megalodon’s max size is uncertain as it is known only from partial remains. Scientists differ on whether it would have more closely resembled a stockier version of the great white shark, the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) or the sand tiger shark (Carcharias taurus). Most estimates of megalodon’s size are based on their teeth; with maximum length estimates up to 18 meters (59 ft) and average length estimates of 10.5 meters (34 ft). Estimates suggest their large jaws could exert a bite force of up to 110,000 to 180,000 newtons (25,000 to 40,000 lbf).[7] Their teeth were thick and robust, built for grabbing prey and breaking bone.

The Megalodon fossil shark tooth is highly sought after by fossil hunters the world over!

Dredging for shark teeth

The white ivory Megalodon teeth from the South Pacific are dredged from the New Caledonia area between Fiji and Australia. This area covers about 5 square miles and the water is about 1,000 feet deep. The dredging permit has expired and no more teeth are legally coming out!  So if you want to have one of these beauties for your collection, now is the time!

Naturally occurring marine borer holes in the root are very common since these teeth lay on the bottom of the ocean.
